Bootcamp: Developing, Facilitating and Managing Action Learning Programs
Principal Consultant, Carter McNamara, about
Action Learning Source
Principal Consultant, Chuck Appleby, on the power of Action Learning in organizations.
Description of the Workshop
Action Learning is used around the world as an innovative, yet powerful and practical approach to address problems and opportunities for individuals, teams and organizations. The process can be customized for a wide variety of outcomes and applications.
The bootcamp will be for those who are soon developing an Action Learning program and, therefore, need prompt guidance and materials to plan, design, implement and manage the program.
The five-day, highly interactive bootcamp is a closely aligned and tightly integrated set of our workshops:
- 1. The Many Faces of Action Learning -- An Introduction to Innovative Approaches
- 2. Action Learning Facilitation
- 3. Designing Action Learning Programs
- 4. Managing Action Learning Programs
Outcomes for Workshop Participants
The outcomes from the bootcamp are very similar to a combination of the outcomes from each of the four workshops (see "Trainings"). However, because participants already have a general idea of the application of their Action Learning program, we are able to customize and carefully target each of the trainings on the needs of the participants; thereby, reducing the duration of the trainings.
Methods of Development in the Workshop
Participants are expected to do approximately four hours of pre-reading and viewing 20 short videos, and to come to the workshop with the clear intention of implementing an Action Learning program soon.
This week-long, highly interactive workshop will be conducted in both single-project and multi-project Action Learning (peer coaching group) processes to enable each participant to facilitate in both formats. Both formats also guide and support each participant to clarify and refine plans for the design, development, facilitation and management of his or her Action Learning program. The workshop includes short lectures with substantial time for questions and answers. Experiences will include debriefs and time for reflection.
During the workshop, each participant will complete a Learning Journal and develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) with goals, actions and strategies for further individual development. The Journal and Plan will regularly be updated during the workshop.
The workshop can be done face-to-face or virtually depending on the nature and needs of participants. The workshop can also be done in-house for an organization. Each workshop is designed for five to eight participants per instructor.
Typical Topics in the Workshop
The topics in the bootcamp are very similar to a combination of the topics from each of the four workshops. However, because participants already have a general idea of the application of their Action Learning program, we are able to customize and carefully target each of the workshops on the needs of the participants; thereby, reducing the duration of the workshops.

NOTE: There is no independent "certification" organization in the field of Action Learning, for example, like the independent International Coach Federation is for the profession of personal and professional coaching. "Independent" means that the certification organization does not concurrently promote and provide certification on its own particular model of Action Learning, while suggesting that it concurrently is the certification organization of other and different models.
